தமிழனுக்கு மட்டும் ஏன் இந்த ஆங்கில மோகம்? - Why this English craze my Thamizh brethren?

"கல் தோன்றி மண் தோன்றா காலத்தே, முன் தோன்றி மூத்த குடி, தமிழ்க்குடி" என்று படித்து, கேட்டு, சொல்லி என்ன பயன் இந்த ஆங்கில மோகம் தலை விரித்தாடும் போது? ஆங்கிலேயன் ஒரு கால கட்டத்தில் உலகையே ஆண்டான். "பகலவன் என் நாட்டில் மறைவதே இல்லை" என்று கர்வத்துடன் சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு எங்கும் வியாபித்துத் தான் இருந்தான். அவனது மொழி அத்தகைய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியிருந்தால் அவன் சென்ற இடமெங்கும் மக்கள் ஆங்கிலம் மட்டுமே தான் பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும், ஆனால் உண்மை நிலை? இந்தியத் துணைக்கண்டம் (இலங்கை, பாகிஸ்தான், வங்காளதேசம், மியன்மார் உட்பட), ஆப்பிரிக்கக் கண்டம் எல்லாம் வெள்ளையன் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருந்தும் இந்நாடுகள் அனைத்திலும், ஏன் வட இந்தியா உட்பட ஆங்கிலம் பேசாமலே இவ்வளவு ஆண்டுகள் இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள். சரி, அப்படி என்னடா முன்னேற்றம் இவ்விடங்களில் பார்த்து விட்டாய் என்று என் மதிப்பிற்குறிய தமிழன் கேட்கலாம். ஆங்கிலேயக் கட்டுப்பாட்டிலிருந்த ஹாங்காங் நாட்டில் கூட பெரும்பான்மை ஆங்கிலம் பேசுவதோ, பெயர் பலகை வைப்பதோ இல்லையே, அவன் நம்மைவிட என்ன குறைந்து விட்டான்? ஆங்கிலேயக் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருந்திராத சீனன், ஆங்கிலமே இல்லாமல் நம்மை நித்தமும் அச்சப் படுத்துகிறானே, அவனைவிட நானும் நீயும் எந்த விதத்தில் நுனி நாக்கில் ஆங்கிலத்துடன் கிழித்து விட்டோம்? பிரிட்டன், ஆஸ்திரேலியா, தென் ஆப்பிரிக்கா மற்றும் அமெரிக்காவில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க சதவிகிதம் (ஸ்பானிஷ் மொழியும் அங்கு பேசுகிறார்கள், அவர்கள் ஆங்கிலப் புலமை கொண்டவர்கள் இல்லை) தவிர வேறு எங்கு ஆங்கிலம் தினசரி வாழ்க்கையில் பேசுகிறார்கள்? அவர்கள் சாப்பிடவில்லையா, பொருட்கள் வாங்கி விற்று வாழ்க்கை நடத்தவில்லையா, அல்லது மற்ற நாடுகளுடன் வாணிபம் தான் செய்யவில்லையா? அன்றாடம் தெருவில் பிச்சையா எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்? நான் சென்ற சில நாடுகளில் (இலங்கை, மலேசியா, தாய்லாந்து, சீனா, ஹாங்காங், வங்காளதேசம்) பெயர் பலகைகள் பெரும்பாலும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் கண்டதில்லை. ஏன் நம் வட நாட்டிலேயே, பீகார், மேற்குவங்கம், ஒடிஷா போன்ற இடங்களில் ஆங்கிலப் பெயர்ப் பலகைகள் காட்டுங்கள் பார்ப்போம். சீனாவில் ஆங்கிலப் பெயர் பலகை (பெரும் வர்த்தக பலகைகள் தவிர - அவற்றிலும் சீன மொழி தான் முதன்மை பெற்றிருக்கும்) தேடுவது, வைக்கோல் போரில் நெல் மணி தேடுவதற்குச் சமம். ஆனால், தமிழ்நாட்டில் தமிழில் பெயர்ப் பலகை வைத்தால் நமக்குப் பிடிக்காது, "தமிழ்ப் புலவர் வந்துட்டாருடா" என்று கேலி செய்வோம். அதென்ன? "பேக்கரி" னு தமிழ்ல எழுதி வைக்கிறத விட்டு, "வெதுப்பகம்" னு புதுசா ஒண்ணு யாருக்கும் புரியாம எழுதியிருக்கான்னு ஒரு விமரிசனம். அழகிய தமிழ்ச் சொல் "அருவி" என்பதை மலையாளச் சகோதரன் பயன்படுத்த, "waterfalls" என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொல்லை தமிழாக்கி "நீர்வீழ்ச்சி" என்றாவது சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாயே, அதையும் விட்டு "வாட்டர்ஃபால்ஸ்" என்றே சொல்ல வேண்டியது தானே என்று கேட்கிறான் தமிழன். புலம் பெயர்ந்து வாழும் தமிழன் தமிழை மறந்து விட்டான் எனச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருந்தது போக, அவன் அங்கே வாழ வைத்துக் கொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறான், இங்குள்ளவன் தான் "தன்மானத்தை" "Self Respect" ஆக மாற்றிக் கொண்டு, "ஐ காண்ட் ரீட் ஆர் ரைட் டமில்" என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டு திரிகிறான். ஆங்கிலம் பேசினால் மட்டுமே தினம் 100 டாலரோ, பவுண்டோ உனக்குக் கொடுத்து விடுவானா மேலை நாட்டவன்? உன்னிடம் என்ன திறமை இருக்கிறதோ, அதைப் பார்த்து பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ள மேற்கத்தியனும், அவன் திறமையைப் பயன்படுத்த நீயும் ஒருவரையொருவர் அணுகுகிறீர்களே தவிர வேறொரு காரணமுமில்லை. நான் மற்ற மொழிகள் கற்பதற்கும் பேசுவதற்கும் எதிரானவனல்லன், தாய்மொழியை இழிவு படுத்தி, ஏளனமாகச் சிரித்து ஆங்கிலம் தான் பெருமைக்குரியது என்ற நினைப்பைக் கண்டிப்பவன்.  ஏதோ தமிழ்ப் பெயர்ப் பலகையைப் பற்றிப் பேசியதால், "ஓ, நீ அந்தக் கட்சி ஆதரவாளனாடா?" என்று கேட்காதீர்கள். "நாமார்க்கும் குடியல்லோம், நமனை அஞ்சோம்"

It is believed that the "Thamizh" (known elsewhere as "Tamil") community originated at a time when stones existed but sand did not. Going by the scientific fact that stones disintegrated to become sand / soil particles, stone existed earlier and the statement meant that Thamizh community existed from time immemorial (Stone age perhaps). Ok, this is something everybody says, but what do we practice? The British held the World under their umbrella and proudly said that "The Sun never set in the British Empire", but if their language had made such a great impact, English should be spoken fluently with a craze in most parts of the world, but is that the reality? They held Srilanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Africa and how much is English spoken on a day to day basis in these countries? Okay, you my dear Thamizh brother / sister might ask "what have these countries achieved by not speaking English, when the west is so affluent?" And my question to you is, what have the Hong Kongese not  achieved being the last country to break away from the British (very recently) but still with most of their population not speaking English? Isn't the West crazy about Hong Kong? How about the Chinese who were not associated at all with the British, who do not speak English and still are a threat to all of us? What did you my dear Thamizh brother and me achieve by speaking English fluently? English is not spoken widely except in places like Britain, Australia, South Africa and a portion of American population. Not all Spanish folks speak fluent English and they work and deliver on par with English speakers. Have these people lost opportunities for growth or are they not doing business with the rest of the world? In countries I have traveled, (Srilanka, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Hongkong, Bangladesh) I have seen most name boards of business establishments in their language and not much in English and even in parts of North India, you would find boards in Hindi / Bengali / Oriya etc. Searching for an English sign board (except giant advertising hoardings) in China is like searching for a grain of rice in a haystack. But, my dear Thamizh brother makes fun of Thamizh sign boards. Why can't one transliterate the English name "Bakery" into Thamizh letters? Why should one find a new Thamizh word for that and confuse me is his contention. When the word "Waterfalls" has a Thamizh word "Aruvi" and our Malayalee brothers and sisters use that, I have lost that word and am at least translating "Waterfalls"verbatim into Thamizh, but my own Thamizh brethren wants me to use "Waterfalls" instead and stop using Thamizh altogether. When people here used to say that all those who have migrated to other countries stop using Thamizh language (which was a reality some time ago), they have started feeling the need to at least talk to their children at home in Thamizh, folks here are the ones that often say "I can't read or write Tamil". Isn't that a shame? Is somebody from the western world likely to pay you a 100 dollars / pounds a day just to speak in fluent English? People come to you for what you are capable of and not because you will sit them down for half an hour and give them a sermon in impeccable English. Alright, now don't misunderstand me as being against learning / speaking English or any other language. I am only against disrespecting or ridculing usage of one's own mother tongue. The drive in Tamilnadu to change all name boards of business establishments to be primarily in Thamizh might have been a political party's direction, so by this post am not vouching for / supporting them or subscribing to their political views. As a famous Thamizh saying goes "I am not bound by anybody and I fear nobody"
